NYGz “Welcome to G-Dom”

A message from DJ Premier…
In the days that we are living, in this very moment, we purists of true music are witnessing the decline of the so-called major label. Another shift in the Matrix must come with medicine to heal the wounds of negativity… I, DJ Premier along with my partner Gordon Franklin, are here to bring all of you a label that you can depend on for credible music. The name of that label is Year Round Records, and it does just that. First out are the NYGz (pronounced EN-Why-Geez). It stands for New York Giantz which we all know cannot be used, but the name represents all of the above. The new album called “Welcome 2 G-Dom” provides the street landscape of skills from the Underground Hip Hop sound. MCs Panchi and Shabeeno drop it down like no other in this flooded pool of nonsense. Thanx to all the producers on this album: Emile, Kingdom, Thorotracks, Harlem Fatz and Biggest Gord… and of course me, for another job well done. Engineered by the legendary King Of Chill (MC Lyte, Audio Two, Alliance), you know you re getting nothing but Class “A” Hip Hop. The only way I can close out this one sheet is to say we live by our motto, “you get what you pay for”… Enjoy the album!
I gotta say it… Primo needs to run for office with words like that. Enter his new group the NYGz, with DJ Premier running the show off his new label, there’s no doubt “Welcome to G-Dom” is an album that delivers.

Steele (of Smif N’ Wessun) “Hostyle Takeover” Mix-Tape

Another Duck Down Records review in one week? What can I say I’m a sucka’ for legitimate shrink wrapped with the barcode mix cd’s minus a DJ goin’ Woot! Woot! and Beep! Beep! Peep this right hear, a solo effort by veteran emcee status Steele of Smif N’ Wessun with his new offering ala mix-tape route, “Hostyle Takeover.” I gotta say, it’s a solid release for a number of reasons… although Steele has no plans of dropping a solo album, a new Smif N’ Wessun album is due out this winter and with Casualties of War currently out right now, Steele slips right in to promote himself on the mix-tape dolo. Believe me, the album is all hype branded with that classic BDD sound.
With the right beat arrangement, Steel goes for broke with his renditions of hot tracks like Jay-Z’s takeover (Hostyle Takeover) and 50’s Back down (via Steele’s Backdown) over his own chorus and lines. I’m really feeling some of the selected beats he chose. Hostyle Takeover also features unreleased and hard to find gems featured only as exclusives. “No love” is a slow grinding chill track produced by The Alchemist and features 5 Ft. of Black Moon while Steel can handle his own on the majority of tracks in the album, there are a number of tracks featuring newbies to the BCC scene like Ruste Juxx, Stormey and O-Smash who bring down the albums hype just a bit. Over all, Duck Down Records simply provides it’s listeners with quality packaged mix cd’s.
Overall, with the new found success Duck Down Records is riding on, it’s only right for Steele to drop a little somethin’ prior to Smif N’ Wessun’s new album entitled… “The Album”

“Thank You Jay Dee” Act 1 mixed by J. Rocc

I don’t think there’s anyone better than J.Rocc (of the World Famous beat Junkies) to tribute a DJ mix to the late, great J. Dilla than J.Rocc himself. Almost anything Jay Dee is credited for, I buy. Anything J. Rocc mixes I buy… put em’ together and you’ve got yourself one helluva album. “Thank You Jay Dee Act 1″ collects tracks produced by J. Dilla during his amazing career. It’s mostly an album filled with his classic production featuring just about everyone in the Hip-Hop game. With a hint of vocals and lyrics in between it’s tracks, the vibe J-Dilla put out was magic. J.Rocc hands down, captures Dilla’s vision of sound throughout the CD. No one can mix it any better. The cuts included in this album features beats by J. Dilla given to the likes of Common, Busta Rhymes, The Pharcyde, A Tribe Called Quest, DeLa Soul, D’Angelo, Lucy Pearl and so many others. I’m diggin’ how the album it’s not about J-Rocc’s mixing skills, but J.Rocc puttin’ Dilla’s life’s work into a story book tale of beats. This is not to one to be missed. Oh, on the side, “Thank You Jay Dee” Act 1 comes with a beautiful fold out picture of Dilla’s funeral.

O.C. “The Underground King” Definitive Hits Collection

These days, Mix CD’s come a dime a dozen. A promotional tool for upcoming releases, exclusive fillers and DJ remixes (both good and bad)… with the abundance of mixtapes out in the market, a lot of them are just as good as flyers… 1 listen and it’s forgotten till the actual album (or event) drops. On the other hand, I came across the closest thing to a greatest hit’ s cd I could find for my man O.C. of D.I.T.C fame. Thank the God’s they did this right! Mixed by the cats over at Next Mill Entertainment, O.C.’s “The Underground King” collects A lot of O.C.’s material that isn’t easy to track down either, and impossible to find if you’re not a vinyl junkie. A lot of the tracks were taken from the “Word..Life” to “Jewelz” era and has some choice cuts featured on Lord Finnesse’s album and numerous vinyl only exclusives.

Sean Price presents “Master P”

After the recent success of “Jesus Price Superstar,” Sean Price is back at it again with another solid effort via the mix-tape route. Before I move on… on a marketing tip, Master P’s cover caught me off guard with it’s “No Limit, Master P” rip off that put a huge laugh to my face. I cleary couldn’t ignore the parody- it’s a great marketing tool if not better than those OG No limit covers! From start to finish, “Master P” is meant to tide fans over until Sean’s next release, it features Sean Price up to no good, aggressively rhyming over choice beats.

“Hip-Hop Forever”and ever by DJ Jazzy Jeff

Though the album was released at the end of 2006, the cuts found in this album are timeless. What better way to celebrate DJ Jazzy Jeff’s fourthcoming release “Return of the Magnificent” than to pay tribute to DJ Jazzy Jeff on the 1’s and 2’s off his latest Mix CD “Hip-Hop Forever 3″ off BBE Records!

DJ Craze’s “Bass Session” (Miami Style) Mix CD

I know this album came out last November but my local Record Store didn’t get it till Today. (1 copy was for sale!?!) When I picked it up my homie said “Cop that it’s fresh… it’s old school Miami Bass Hip-Hop.” 1st thing that came to mind was 69 boys… Shaq, (I don’t know why.) and MC Brains. (that dudes from Chicago!) When I looked at the track selection I didn’t see those names… I did see 2 Live crew but hey… They were as Nasty as they wanted to be, especially with bass… and bootie! Bass Session is like straight history. Thanks to Craze’s wicked record collection of late 80’s-mid 90’s Miami Bass, Craze pays homage to the early legends of Miami Bass that came out of the Bass scene down south in Florida.
