9th Wonder & Buckshot’s “Formula”

Whoa! I am really diggin’ this album! Whatever “The Formula” this album’s bangin’! For a hot second, I felt 9th Wonder’s was doing too much and a lot of his stuff sounded very repetitive. He slowed down a tad in the 07′ working on his Dream Merchant 2 album. (which was satisfactory) Give the man his props on the production boards! Along with Murs (on their separate projects) 9th does a bang up job aligning himself with veteran MC’s like Buckshot on this follow up album from the well respected “Chemistry” album. Now, lets not forget Buckshot himself for choosing the right Producer to handle his well orchestrated rhymes. Boot Camps general blends streetwise lyrics over a chilled out flow that gerners attention.
From the opening tracks “The Formula” and “Ready,” you’re blessed with a much improved 9th Wonder sound whose clarity in production seems crystal clear. Buck’s rhyme patterns flow distinctly to the beat with a no nonsense attitude. He’s straight vibin’ off the music. The Formula reminds me of the dope collaborations between Pete Rock and CL Smooth in the mid 90’s with tracks like “No Future” and “Just Display” are great examples of 9th and Buck being greatly influenced. Talib Kweli also drops a line on “Hold it down” with an absolutely chilled out beat courtesy of 9th. Don’t expect a Black Moon or Little Brother type album here, Buckshot and 9th manage to separate that notion by focusing on each others characteristics and bringing fourth an album representing the essence of he’s the Producer and I’m the Emcee… overall, The Formula works!
