Common Music Video Round Up!

With the release of Common’s new Album “Finding Forever” which is out today, (with a review coming real soon!) Da’ Big Playback’s gonna take a look back at some of Common’s celebrated Video’s throughout his career. Common and his contributions continue to elevate Hip-Hop at a more positive state. If we could get everyone to take a tasting of what Common offer’s within every album dropped I think Hip-Ho would be in a stronger state and people wouldn’t be bull sh!tin’ out and about the streets . Enjoy the Video’s, each one is a classic in it’s own right!

O.C. “The Underground King” Definitive Hits Collection

These days, Mix CD’s come a dime a dozen. A promotional tool for upcoming releases, exclusive fillers and DJ remixes (both good and bad)… with the abundance of mixtapes out in the market, a lot of them are just as good as flyers… 1 listen and it’s forgotten till the actual album (or event) drops. On the other hand, I came across the closest thing to a greatest hit’ s cd I could find for my man O.C. of D.I.T.C fame. Thank the God’s they did this right! Mixed by the cats over at Next Mill Entertainment, O.C.’s “The Underground King” collects A lot of O.C.’s material that isn’t easy to track down either, and impossible to find if you’re not a vinyl junkie. A lot of the tracks were taken from the “Word..Life” to “Jewelz” era and has some choice cuts featured on Lord Finnesse’s album and numerous vinyl only exclusives.

What up party people! The videos above are of a MC Faceoff hosted by BBC 1Xtra (UK) during their Homegrown Weekend special from the early part of this year. Basically they got 3 of the best MCs from each of the two genres Drum & Bass and UK Garage (Grime) and have them face each other. Here are the details:
D&B Team: DJ Sappo (Captain) . Skibadee . MC Fun . Riddla
UKG Team: DJ Richie Vibe Vee (Captain) . D.E.Velopment . Bashy . Doom Man
Round 1: MCs over their own genre
Round 2: UKG MCs on D&B beats and vice versa
Round 3: Both sets of MCs go over “alien” riddims
Peep the vid and check out the lyrical skills of these MCs spittin’ over beats, styles, and accents we don’t usually hear over here.

Dizzee Rascal “Maths + English”
So this isn’t such a new release, it’s been out for almost two months–the import that is (it’s not out on cd domestically)–and I don’t know what you’re waiting for, but if you don’t have it, you’re missin out. For me, this was one of those albums where my favorite track changes from this to that in the matter of days…or less. I went from lovin “Hardback (industry)” to “Bubbles” to “Pussyole (Old Skool)” and right now I think I’m on “World Outside.” Dizzee Rascal says his lyrics like he means it, like you can hear it in his voice. He’s not just reciting or shouting out loud over the beats. And a variety of beats there are a many: hip-hop, grime, jungle, even a dirty south sound (and not just because UGK is on that track “Where’s da G’s”). Aside from UGK, Maths + English also features Lily Allen, Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys), and D&B producer, Shy FX. There are a number of reviews that say this is his most accessible album, and I have to agree, but why don’t you check it out yourself.
Quality! Thus far, this is my favorite album of the year. What’s yours?
Rakim aka King Heron?

Huh?! That’s exactly what I said when I found out that Rakim well be performing as his alter-ego “King Heron”. King Heron?! No disrespect and all to the one of the most talented MCs to grace the mic but, c’mon. I think the last person in this world that needs an “alter-ego” publicity stunt is Rakim. Anyways, we’ll hear more about this come August 5th when he’ll be performing at the Highline Ballroom in NYC headlined by Z-Trip and will feature performances by Gift of Gab, Aceyalone and DJ Phoreyz.
Wu: The Story of The Wu-Tang Clan (Documentary)

If you ever wanted to know the full story of one of the most influential supergroups of hip hop peep this. “Wu: The Story of The Wu-Tang Clan” is a new documentary of the rise, fall, the good and bad times of the Wu-Tang Clan. I’ll be honest for a sec, when I first heard of Wu back in the day was when I first started DJing back in 93. I had picked up URB which was printed on newspaper back then and it was FREE, damn I’m old. Anyways, they had a list of recommendations and Wu-Tang’s - Protect Ya’ Neck was on there, I forgot who recommended it. So I went to my record shop that I frequent back in the day on Melrose and picked up the white label. Being a fan of old Kung Fu movies and of course hiphop, the record blew me away, it was what I’ve always wanted. Since then I’ve always had a deep respect for the Wu as a group and their solo projects so this documentary ties all those things together and hopefully this doc won’t fail to impress.
